Son nom provient est li\u00e9 \u00e0 Margaret Polk, petite amie du pilote Robert K. Morgan et habitante de Memphis dans le Tennessee. Apr\u00e8s avoir effectu\u00e9 son tour d&rsquo;op\u00e9rations, l&rsquo;appareil fut renvoy\u00e9 aux USA pour une tourn\u00e9e afin de vendre des bons de guerre et de contribuer au moral du pays. Apr\u00e8s la guerre, l&rsquo;appareil resta jusque dans les ann\u00e9es 1980 \u00e0 Memphis, se d\u00e9gradant progressivement par la faute des \u00e9l\u00e9ments et des vandales. La ville de Memphis avait offert l&rsquo;appareil \u00e0 l&rsquo;US Air Force dans les ann\u00e9es 1970 mais resta sur place jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que le National Museum of the United States Air Force le r\u00e9cup\u00e8re au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000 et entame une longue restauration. L&rsquo;appareil enti\u00e8rement restaur\u00e9 fut pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au public le 17 mai 2018 dans la galerie de la Seconde Guerre mondiale du NMUSAF, o\u00f9 il est toujours visible aujourd&rsquo;hui.<\/p>\n<p>Les marques du Memphis Belle \u00e9volu\u00e8rent consid\u00e9rablement au cours de sa carri\u00e8re op\u00e9rationnelle, et plus encore lors de sa tourn\u00e9e aux US. Il est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ici comme il \u00e9tait \u00e0 la fin de sa carri\u00e8re op\u00e9rationnelle en mai 1943.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;appareil, parfois surnomm\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0The Belle\u00a0\u00bb, fut le sujet d&rsquo;un film en 1990. C&rsquo;est probablement l&rsquo;avion le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre de l&rsquo;histoire, bien que le \u00ab\u00a0Spirit of Saint Louis\u00a0\u00bb de Charles Lindbergh et le B-29 Superfortress \u00ab\u00a0Enola Gay\u00a0\u00bb soient \u00e9galement de bons candidats \u00e0 ce titre.
